Baron De Kalb Chapter NSDAR
The Baron De Kalb Chapter NSDAR is one of 3,000 active chapters in the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. It was organized in Clarkston, Georgia on November 22, 1912, but later moved its location to Decatur, Georgia where it continues to meet. The chapter was named for Baron Johann de Kalb, who was granted the rank of Major General by the Continental Congress and joined the Continental Army in October 1777. He served with General George Washington at Valley Forge, led the American Army to relieve the siege of Charleston, South Carolina, and was mortally wounded at the Battle of Camden, South Carolina in 1780.
The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was founded in 1890 to promote Historic Preservation, Education, and Patriotism across the United States of America. Since the Society’s founding, more than one million women have found purpose and passion in DAR membership. The DAR is a non-profit, non-political volunteer women’s service organization that was founded in 1890 and headquartered in Washington, D.C. DAR boasts nearly 190,000 members in 3,000 chapters across the United States and internationally. Any woman, 18 years or older—regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background—who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution, is eligible for membership.
DAR members volunteer millions of service hours annually in their local communities, including supporting active-duty military personnel and assisting veteran patients, awarding thousands of dollars in scholarships and financial aid to students, and supporting schools for underserved children with annual donations exceeding one million dollars.
